How to I stop selecting and changing the wrong object in 3ds Max?

Answer:

Use the lock selection toggle!

Simply select the desired object to change and press SHIFT+CTRL+N to lock the selection. Alternatively, click on the padlock icon marked in the screenshot below. This will prevent any accidental adjustment of other objects. When the edits are completed, repeat the shortcut or unlock the icon to release the locked object and resume working on the rest of the model.
