The Layer Walk tool in AutoCAD is one of the most under used, but is essential for understanding drawing files that you haven’t created. It allows you to isolate layers individually or collectively and maintain the setting when you exit the command.
Open any file and select the Layer Walk command. See Figs 1&2.
The following dialogue box appears, and all the visible layers are highlighted. See Fig 3.
When a single layer is selected, the viewing window shows the objects on that layer, then use the up and down arrows to cycle through the other layers in the drawing file. See Fig 4.
To select multiple layers, hold down the Ctrl or Shift keys to select individual or consecutive groups of layers. See Fig 5.
To maintain the layer selection on exit of the command, uncheck the Restore on exit option and select Close to complete the command. See Fig 6.
