Autodesk have retired the Mental Ray renderer in 3ds Max and Maya products. Mental Ray has been replaced this with the more modern Arnold renderer. In April 2016, Autodesk purchased Solid Angle, the makers of Arnold and have now included this renderer in the 2017 products.

Maya 2017 was released on the 26th of July 2017 and includes the Arnold renderer. 3ds Max 2017 Service Pack 2 will include the Arnold renderer which will be known as MAXtoA.

You may be wondering why Autodesk have made this change, and if it is possible to still get hold of Mental Ray. Arnold is a newer, faster, easier to use rendering engine, which will give users better quality renders in their Maya and Max products. For users that still require Mental Ray, this product can be purchased from Cadline, contact us here for more info.
