Vault Office is a great application for those non-CAD users in design teams who not only need a simple `add-in’ interface for their Microsoft Office applications, but also take an active role in approval gates for both BIM-AEC and Manufacturing disciplines.
However, it needs to be clarified that there are no Administrative tools to configure and manage Vault available via Vault Office. I recently contacted Autodesk regarding this and they confirmed that this is `as designed’. In other words, Vault Office is designed to complement an installation of Vault Workgroup or Vault Professional. The functionality for file management is identical for Vault Office when compared to an installation of Vault Workgroup or Vault Professional, with the exception that there are no tools provided to modify compliant CAD applications.
On a positive note, licenses for Vault Office are approximately ¼ the cost compared with Vault Professional, so it’s definitely worth a consideration when finding the correct balance for licenses required for both CAD and non-CAD users in your design teams.
