I Noticed this useful tool for the AutoCAD platforms a few weeks ago, very handy for those drawings containing Xrefs too large for your current system. Basically it unloads them in the background so that the main or host drawing can then be accessed.
This application allows for the loading and unloading external reference files in selected drawing files prior to fully opening the host drawing. This is useful when working with many XREFs or a collection of large XREF files. (This is typical in many Survey, Civil or Architectural drawings. The application permits the user to select the desired drawing they wish to open, by selecting reload or unload checkboxes, and putting a check against the desired XREFs to be modified, then click Save and Open in the application dialogue box. The app in the background opens the selected drawing database, makes the modification to the selected XREF options, saves the drawing database, and then opens the file for actual editing in ‘Cad’
The application is available for AutoCAD 2013, 2014 and the Civil 3D 2013 and 2014 platforms. It should be noted that this application should only be run prior to opening the drawing not while the file is in use.
it's available from the Autodesk Exchange, see
