Selecting Several Objects - AutoCAD

I’m trying to select several objects at a time, using a combination of picking individual objects as well as the Window and Crossing selection methods. The problem I’ve got is each time I select more objects, the objects I had previously picked get deselected! How do I stop this annoying feature?

This often happens when users click on the first of the three icons on the top right corner of the Properties Palette. Doing so, changes the icon from a plus symbol to a 1, users don’t immediately realise what they have done as nothing else seems to happen but this actually toggles the system variable PICKADD, thereby causing your selection problem! Either, click the icon again, to set it back to a plus symbol, or, enterPICKADD on the command line and then set it back to the default value of 2.
