Point clouds are increasingly becoming common place in our workflows and with Autodesk ReCap we have a powerful tool for viewing and managing point cloud data. One of the most important tasks for anyone wishing to use a point cloud in a model with real world co-ordinates is to geo-reference . Geo-Referencing the Point Cloud data allows for real word insertion across multiple platforms such as AutoCAD, Navisworks, Revit and Civil 3D.
Geo-Referencing can be done during registration of the point cloud or after by returning to the registered views.
To Geo-Reference the Point Cloud we must have known co-ordinates of points captured on site. This can be done either with Targets or Survey Markers. To enable rotation of the point cloud at least 2 No. Targets or Survey Markers must be known.
This can be done from an existing known point or a GPS Device.
It is recommended for a site which is frequently visited that a permanent set of Targets with known co-ordinates are installed.
Geo-Referencing can be done during registration of the point cloud or after by returning to the registered views using the Home toolbar.
If a Target of known co-ordinates is located in the scan view, this can be Referenced by using the Target Marker Command from the Tool Bar.
If a visible point is known, such as a Building Corner and Eave height we can use this and convert it to a Survey Marker.
Both use the same process to assign co-ordinates to the point by converting them into Survey Markers.
When Clicking on a Target the Point Window will launch. (If the Target can be identified automatically)
From the Point window select ‘Make Survey Point’
For the First Known Point and any new Points the Point Identifier must be added along with the known co-ordinates.
For existing Survey Markers visible in other scan views these can be selected from the list.
